"Sarah and John met by chance at university, and they spent wonderful student years together. He was handsome, smart, a native of City, and the head of the Student Union. She was enthusiastic and beautiful, serving as class monitor. They were the envy of their campus, a couple admired for their talents and looks. After graduation, they both secured jobs at a foreign company in Vietnam. Their beautiful love story seemed destined for a perfect wedding, but just before their marriage health check, a tragedy struck. Learning the news, the man she loved most walked away; John ended their relationship with those heart-wrenching words: "I'm sorry, Sarah, but I come from a family where I must marry someone who can bear children. I'm sorry."

"How could you say such things? John, how could you be like this?" Despite Sarah's feeble protests, John turned away, leaving her standing alone amidst the bustling crowd. Sarah's vision blurred; her ears rang. Why? Why now? Would their five-year love story end like this, just weeks before their wedding? She couldn't believe what she had just heard. The man she loved, who once swore she was the love of his life, could say such things just before their wedding, as if to end their dreams of a happy family with the three words, "I'm sorry." She couldn't find a reason for his departure.

Such is life, where happiness and sorrow are separated by a fragile wall. At times, you think you've grasped happiness in the palm of your hand, only to realize it's so far away. Sarah had often dreamed of wearing a pure white wedding gown, but now everything had vanished; it all seemed like a nightmare she never wanted to dream. She didn't know how to face this reality, how to tell her parents and those around her. What had she done wrong? She felt frustrated, crying out in sorrow, collapsing in the street, ignoring the scrutinizing eyes of those around her. Golden leaves fell beneath her feet; autumn had arrived...

Then John left for the US, perhaps to distance himself from Sarah and find someone else. Sarah continued to go to work, pretending nothing had happened. The only difference was her eyes, sadder and deeper. Sometimes she stood by the window, gazing into the distance. Now her work was her joy. For years, she remained alone. Her parents urged her to marry, but she remained silent. There were suitors, but she refused them all. She feared enduring another abandonment by someone she loved. Once with John was enough.

Then Michael appeared. He was a friend of her brother returning from studying abroad. Michael came to her gently, like a breeze. When a man loves you sincerely, he doesn't need flowery words; he just watches you with a smile of happiness, always following your shadow. They worked in the same building, and Michael noticed Sarah often skipped breakfast. Every day, he prepared breakfast for her: sometimes bread and milk, sometimes her favorite sticky rice roll, or even homemade rolled eggs. Knowing she took the bus, fearing for her safety late at night, he quietly accompanied her until she reached home safely. His goodnight messages were filled with his feelings for her.

Michael loved Sarah sincerely. She knew it, not accepting but not rejecting his feelings either, considering him a friend. Sometimes Michael's care moved Sarah; her heart raced every time they met, smiling at the thought of him. But she tried to suppress the emotions deep inside her heart. Sarah dared not cross the boundary of friendship to start a love affair with Michael. She felt unworthy of him. Why? Because he was too good; he deserved happiness, not the unhappiness she brought. If he knew the truth that she couldn't conceive, what would he do? Would he choose to leave her like John did?

"Why do you always reject my feelings, why do you always avoid me?" Michael asked one day.

"You haven't done anything wrong," Sarah replied weakly. "Just forget about me. Continuing like this will only cause us both pain. It's best to stop."

"But Sarah, I love you. Do you have feelings for me too?"

"Love you? How can I love you when you can accept a wife who can't bear children for you?"

Sarah shouted at Michael before turning away, tears streaming down her face like the early summer rain. There was a bitter, heartbreaking feeling... It seemed even heaven was crying for her pain; the rain grew heavier. Did Michael know how she felt right now? She felt as if she was experiencing the ultimate pain, sometimes wishing she could disappear, go somewhere far away to forget everything and start a new life. Is there any pain greater than that of a woman witnessing other girls getting married and having children? It felt like she was experiencing the peak of pain, sometimes dreaming of having a child of her own.

As for Michael, after hearing her say those words, he remained silent, standing as if rooted to the spot, despite the heavy rain pouring down on him. Michael seemed to be losing control of himself, unable to believe what she had just said. It turned out he didn't know she had gone through such a painful time before. What would he do now? He struggled to choose his happiness.

A few days later, Michael waited for Sarah at Cafe. She had just finished work, dressed in a beautiful office dress.

"You look very beautiful today," he said.

"Thank you."

Cafe had been a meeting place for Sarah and John, and today, by coincidence, Michael had asked her to meet him there. Returning here, a familiar feeling rushed back, tears welling up as she remembered the past. Sarah lifted her Mocha glass, a drink she had loved since her student days. She enjoyed the faint aroma of coffee mixed with the sweet taste of fresh cream and hot chocolate. Habits are hard to break, and if you don't try to change them, they become even harder to abandon. Like Sarah, she had grown accustomed to not dating for a long time, Valentine's Day without flowers and gifts, without holding someone's hand and strolling through the streets. She created a prickly outer shell, like a snail retreating into its shell when faced with obstacles. She had suffered a past trauma that nothing could compensate for.

"Why do you always order Mocha?" Michael asked. "Why don't you try another drink? There are many delicious beverages here."

"Oh, it's just a habit," Sarah replied.

Hearing Sarah's answer, Michael fell silent. Sitting beside Sarah at such a close distance, he could hear the beating of his own heart. Today, he decided to speak his mind to her. If not now, he might lose Sarah forever.

"I know about you and John, but I'm not like him. Meeting you was fate, but loving you is beyond my control. I love the person you are, not to have children for me. Sarah, whether you can have children or not doesn't matter to me. As long as we can be happy together. I love you, that's the truth, and you have to believe me."

"Do you believe me? What about your parents? Can they accept you marrying a girl who can't have children? Can you live with someone like me for the rest of your life?"

Michael looked at Sarah, his eyes unable to hide his emotions. Taking her hand, this small girl whom he always wanted to protect, whom he wanted to be a firm shoulder, a broad back for her to lean on whenever she felt weak.

"Maybe you don't know. The truth is, I'm adopted. They're close friends of my parents, who died when I was very young in a car accident. They took me in and treated me as their own because my mother couldn't conceive. And now, you see, they're still happy together. As long as two hearts are always directed towards each other, sharing worries and difficulties in life, nothing else matters. We can adopt a child, you understand?"

Hearing Michael's words, Sarah could only cry; she couldn't hold back the tears streaming down her face. Suddenly, he embraced her, something he had wanted to do for a long time. Let the past pass naturally; the present and the future are what everyone should strive for.

A year after their wedding day, they went to City for in vitro fertilization (IVF), adopting a child in 2018.
